Canada-USA debt load comparisons Canada’s accumulated deficit at March 31, 2015 was $612 Billion(B). The population is 35 Million (M) with 2.5 people per house yielding 14M households. Canadian debt per household is $43,715. USA accumulated deficit at September 30, 2014 was $17,700B. The population is 319M with 2.5 people per household yielding 127.6M households. USA debt per household is $138,715USD or $153,197CDN at an fx rate of 1.1044. The implication is that Canada could borrow 3.5 times more debt before it has the debt equivalency of the USA. Potentially Canada could borrow more money to finance domestic projects to stimulate the economy for Canadians during this economic downturn. In addition, Canada should consider maintaining ownership of its key resources and assets because the more security you have the more you can borrow.
